New Guinea PM says elections may take time
Location: Guinea.
Source: Associated Press. Posted on Wed, 3rd Feb 2010.
Guinea's new prime minister says a presidential election meant to bring civilian rule may not be held within six months.
A breakthrough agreement reached last month had called for a vote to take place within that timeframe.
But Jean-Marie Dore, a longtime opposition leader, told Guineans late Tuesday that it will take time to appoint competent ministers to a transitional unity government.
Guinea's military leader Capt. Moussa "Dadis" Camara, who seized power in a December 2008 coup, agreed last month not to return to the West African country. He is recuperating in Burkina Faso after surviving an assassination attempt.
Prior to the 2008 coup, Guinea had had two dictators since independence from France, both of whom died in office.
